There comes a point in every tech-lover's life where you have to stop playing "storage Tetris." You know the game - moving a folder of RAW photography files to an old thumb drive just so you can squeeze in a new sample pack, all while your system drive screams for mercy. Well, I finally decided enough was enough.
I’ve just welcomed a new addition to the desk: a Seagate Expansion 8TB external hard drive. It’s a sturdy bit of kit that sits quite handsomely in my workspace, and honestly, the sheer scale of it feels like a bit of a luxury. Eight terabytes!!! That is a lot of room for my ever-growing mountain of photography, my slightly-out-of-control MP3 collection (I’m a hoarder, I admit it), and the endless paper trail of emails and documents that seem to breed in the dark.
The real magic, however, isn't just in the big Seagate drive - it’s the "Great Migration" it allows me to perform with my SSDs.
Once the bulk of my archives are safely tucked away on the 8TB beast, I’m freeing up a 2TB SSD to act as a dedicated Data Drive. This is going to be the engine room for my heavy hitters. I’m talking about the big Spectrasonics trio - Omnisphere, Trilian, and Stylus RMX - alongside Nexus 5, EZDrummer 3, and even my old, reliable friend Hypersonic 2. Having those libraries running off a fast SSD rather than cluttering up my system drive is going to make everything feel incredibly snappy.
I’ve also earmarked another SSD specifically for my family history research. It’s nice to know that all those precious records and photos will have their own dedicated home, rather than being scattered across three different drives and a prayer.
Centralising everything like this feels like a massive weight off my shoulders. No more hunting through drawers for "that one silver drive" to find a specific snare sample or a photo from three years ago. My system drive is finally breathing again, and the clutter is gone.
With the files ported over and the desk looking tidy, I'm starting to feel like I’m really clearing the decks. The technical "faff" is fading, which means I'll be able to finally dive head-first into the photography and music projects I’ve got lined up for 2026.
Watch this space - things are about to get productive!!!
