Welcome back to the blog!!!
Today, I’m absolutely buzzing to talk about something that’s been a real game-changer in my photography workflow: DxO PureRAW. If you've been following my journey, you'll know I'm always on the hunt for tools that make a genuine difference, especially since I waved goodbye to Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop and settled into the wonderful world of Skylum Luminar Neo.

So, you can imagine my excitement when DxO announced PureRAW 5! I was already incredibly impressed with version 4, and the thought of what improvements they could possibly make had me practically bouncing off the walls. I've been eagerly awaiting this upgrade, as it slots perfectly into the streamlined workflow I've developed, focusing on getting the absolute best out of my RAW files right at the start.
What’s New in Version 5? The Black Magic Just Got a Power-Up!
So, what exactly has DxO cooked up to make version 5 so exciting? For a piece of software that already felt like it had maxed out the quality dial, the changes in PureRAW 5 are seriously impressive, focusing on precision, speed, and workflow improvements - all things I’m keen on since I've fully transitioned to Luminar Neo.
1. DeepPRIME 3: The Engine Gets a Tune-Up
At the heart of PureRAW is the DeepPRIME technology, and in version 5, we get DeepPRIME 3. While DeepPRIME XD (now XD2 for Bayer sensors) was a monumental leap, this new iteration is all about refinement. DxO claims it pushes noise reduction and detail extraction even further, and from my initial tests, I have to agree.
The key technical takeaway here is that DeepPRIME 3 now integrates the correction of chromatic aberrations right into the demosaicing and denoising process. Essentially, it handles more complex image cleanup in one single, smarter step. The result? Even cleaner images with richer, more accurate colours right out of the gate. For my concert shots, where colour fringing and terrible noise go hand-in-hand, this is a massive win.
2. Local Adjustments: Targeted Precision (This is HUGE!)
This is the feature I’m most thrilled about. Up until now, PureRAW was a global processing tool - it treated the whole image the same way. But with version 5, we now have Local Adjustments!
Selective Denoising & Sharpening: We can now create masks to fine-tune the noise reduction and Lens Sharpness Optimization in specific areas of the image.
Why does this matter? Think about it: a high-ISO landscape shot where the sky needs aggressive denoising, but the finely detailed foreground rocks could do with less smoothing and perhaps a touch more targeted sharpening. Now, we can do that right inside PureRAW 5!!! It gives us the power to dial in the perfect amount of processing where it’s needed most, rather than accepting a "one-size-fits-all" result. It's truly a game-changer for those tricky, high-ISO files.
3. Workflow Polish: Interface, Presets, and Speed
While the raw processing improvements are the main event, DxO hasn't forgotten about usability:
Custom Presets: This is fantastic. You can now create and save custom presets. If you have a specific camera or a specific type of shooting (like my concert photography!!!), you can set your preferred level of noise reduction and sharpness, save it, and apply it with a single click. Efficiency is king, and this speeds up the whole process.
Refreshed Interface: The whole interface has been given a smart, cleaner overhaul, making the process feel even smoother and more intuitive.
Faster Processing: And crucially, the processing speed seems to have had a noticeable bump. Less waiting around means more time for creative fun in Luminar Neo, which is always a good thing!!!
Integrating PureRAW 5 into My Luminar Neo Workflow: A Match Made in Heaven
Since making the big switch away from the Adobe suite, my photography workflow has become significantly more streamlined and, frankly, more enjoyable. For me, the process is now about ensuring the RAW files are absolutely pristine before the creative editing begins in Luminar Neo. This is precisely where PureRAW, and now the souped-up PureRAW 5, plays a crucial, non-negotiable role.
The Power of Pre-Processing
I treat PureRAW as the essential first step in my image clean-up routine. Instead of dragging a noisy RAW file into Luminar Neo and trying to fix the issues there, I simply:
Select: Choose the high-ISO or noise-filled RAW files I need to process.
Process: Run them through PureRAW 5, using the incredible DeepPRIME 3 engine. Now, with Local Adjustments, I can even make targeted refinements right here if necessary, ensuring things like sharp foregrounds or smooth background bokeh are perfectly optimized before leaving DxO.
Export: PureRAW creates a beautiful, clean DNG file. This DNG is a linear RAW file - it keeps all the dynamic range of the original but has the noise and optical flaws completely eradicated.
Why Luminar Neo Loves PureRAW’s DNG Files
The magic truly happens when I import that clean DNG file into Luminar Neo. Because all the nasty noise and optical imperfections have already been fixed by PureRAW’s "black magic," Luminar Neo doesn't have to waste processing power or introduce artifacts by trying to denoise a terrible file.
What does this mean for my editing?
Cleaner Edits: My creative adjustments in Luminar Neo - things like applying Looks, adjusting colours with the tools, or using Sky Replacement - are now applied to a fundamentally superior file. The results are much cleaner, with less chance of weird banding or blotchy colours appearing when I push the sliders.
Faster Results: I spend far less time battling noise and more time enjoying the creative tools in Luminar Neo. The time saved is phenomenal.
Maximum Quality: I get the benefit of DxO's renowned optical corrections (which are seriously top-notch) combined with Luminar Neo's innovative, layer-based creative tools. It’s genuinely the best of both worlds.
The introduction of Local Adjustments in PureRAW 5 is a massive productivity boost for my system, offering fine control right at the start of the workflow, making the creative phase in Luminar Neo even smoother.
Final Verdict: Is PureRAW 5 Worth the Upgrade? Absolutely!
If you’ve read this far, you can probably tell I'm absolutely sold on DxO PureRAW. As a photographer who demands the cleanest starting point for my creative work in Luminar Neo, this software is simply indispensable.
The upgrade to PureRAW 5 isn't just a minor iteration; it's a significant step forward, primarily driven by the implementation of Local Adjustments and the enhanced fidelity of DeepPRIME 3. Being able to selectively refine noise reduction and sharpness right at the start of the process is invaluable, especially for challenging high-ISO images like those I capture at concerts. It means even less time messing about in post-production and more time enjoying the creative fun.
If you’re still wrestling with noise and lens imperfections, or if you’ve already adopted PureRAW 4, my advice is simple: make the leap!!! PureRAW 5 maintains its title as the king of noise reduction and optical correction, and the new features slot perfectly into a modern, streamlined workflow (especially if you're like me and prefer the flexibility of Luminar Neo). It genuinely elevates your RAW files, giving you the best possible foundation for stunning finished images.
Go on, give your images the gift of PureRAW 5's black magic - you won't regret it!!!
